Taste of the Triangle 2010: A Night of Magic
EdUCate! hosted their 16th annual restaurant tasting event to benefit University City’s five public schools. More than 500 people attended the April 23rd event at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, including 40 teachers, 6 administrators, and school board member John Lee Evans. Brook Feerick chaired the event for the third year, with Michele Lolly and Mary McCabe assisting with the auction components.
Twenty-two generous restaurants supplied an impressive array of food: everything from Anthology’s dessert to Zocalo’s Carnitas was delicious! The numerous guest chefs were warmly greeted diners and went out of their way to pamper attendees. EdUCate! presented each chef with a special Taste of the Triangle sweatshirt as a small token of thanks.
The Standley String Quartet played during check-in, and The Classical Jazz Trio – made up of Standley teachers Ray Conseur, Dan Coulson and Phillip Marcus - performed during dinner. Magician Joel Ward amazed guests at the VIP reception, and two additional magicians roamed the crowd performing magic tricks during the evening. Professional photographer (and UCHS alumnus) Katie DiSimone captured the memories as she caught up with old friends. That’s the true beauty of “Taste” – multiple generations of UC families having a chance to meet and catch up!
Thanks to Curie dad Monte Carroll (in a bright red tuxedo!), the live and silent auctions garnered active bidding. Special thanks to all the auction donors, and to the Reinhart and Spinosa families for their winning bids on the kitchen and bath remodels. In a fitting twist, our kitchen design donor, Alison Dorvillier, was the winning bidder of Paul McCabe’s home-cooked dinner for six. Chances are good that he’ll get to cook in a really nice kitchen!
Net proceeds from the event topped $75K. EdUCate board members voted to fund all remaining Teacher Wish List (TWL) items with the “Taste” proceeds! Teachers will receive everything from gel electrophoresis equipment at UCHS to help with a Challenger Field trip for Spreckels students. In addition to TWL fulfillment, EdUCate! will continue to support technology improvements on all campuses, working with admin teams to complement and support the new Prop S-funded interactive whiteboard classroom systems.

Thanks to all the restaurants who made our event a huge success!
Please give them your business and thank them for supporting our schools.

Oktoberfest 2009 was a terrific success. The University City community obviously was ready for a party, and EdUCate’s wonderful sponsors were ready to help us throw one. Our thanks to everyone who donated, volunteered, performed or attended. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

Standley Park was filled with families enjoying games and contests. High school students volunteered to run the kiddie games, and to help with set up and break down. Retired folks came out to listen to some good music and grab a bratwurst or pretzel. Very special keg soft drinks were served, and samples of award-winning San Diego County microbrews were available in our Beer Garden.  Standley Park and Rec staff were our incredible co-hosts. SDPD, SDFD and the ABC helped us conform to all the regulatory requirements.

The event’s net proceeds were over ten thousand dollars, all of which will go directly into UC classrooms this year. We also garnered over five thousand dollars in Dollar A Day donations. Thank you!! Perhaps best of all, we introduced lots of our school families to EdUCate, and involved a lot of young parent volunteers. The organization will be going strong for years with their enthusiastic support.
